Golden Temple
About the Golden Temple
- The Spiritual Heart of Sikhism
The Golden Temple is not just a place of worship but a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das Ji, the 4th Sikh Guru, the temple is uniquely built at a level lower than the surrounding ground to symbolize humility. Its four entrances in all four cardinal directions signify that people from all walks of life and all religions are equally welcome.
The stunning gold-leaf work on the upper floors and the dome was added in the early 19th century by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, using over 100 kg of gold. The temple sits in the center of the Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank), which is believed to have healing properties.
