About Kurukshetra

To step onto the soil of Kurukshetra is to walk through the pages of humanity’s greatest epic. Located in the plains of Haryana, this sacred region—reverently called Dharmakshetra—is the legendary stage where the monumental Mahabharata war was fought and where the cosmic dialogue of the Bhagavad Gita was spoken. Long before it became a place of historical inquiry, Kurukshetra was a cradle of Vedic civilization, a sanctuary where great sages meditated on the banks of the now-lost Sarasvati River, leaving behind an eternal spiritual footprint.

For the modern seeker, Kurukshetra is a profound landscape of introspection and deep cleansing. Here, the vast, tranquil waters of the ancient Brahma Sarovar mirror the sky, offering a space of immense quietude, while the sacred banyan tree at Jyotisar stands as a living witness to the moment Lord Krishna delivered His eternal message of duty and detachment to a hesitant Arjuna. From the ancient steps of Sannihit Sarovar to the vibrant spiritual energy of the Bhadrakali Shakti Peeth, Kurukshetra is not just a destination of monuments; it is a pilgrimage into the heart of Dharma itself. We invite you to explore this holy ground, where the echoes of the Gita still guide seekers toward truth and inner peace.

How To Reach

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Question 1: What and where is the exact birthplace of the Bhagavad Gita?
    • Answer 1: The exact birthplace of the Bhagavad Gita is Jyotisar, located about 8 km from Kurukshetra city center. It is the precise spot where Lord Krishna delivered the celestial song to Arjuna. The main attraction here is an ancient, holy Banyan Tree (Vat Vriksha), which is believed to be a direct offshoot of the original tree that witnessed this divine event.
  • Question 2: Is Kurukshetra home to an authentic Shakti Peeth?
    • Answer 2: Yes, Kurukshetra houses the Shri Devikoop Bhadrakali Temple (also known as Savitri Peeth). It is revered as one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. According to Hindu scriptures, the right ankle of Goddess Sati fell at this very spot. Devotees traditionally offer clay horses to the deity upon the fulfillment of their wishes.
  • Question 3: Can devotees take a holy bath in Brahma Sarovar? What are the facilities?
    • Answer 3: Yes, taking a holy dip in the vast waters of Brahma Sarovar is considered highly auspicious, especially during Solar Eclipses (Surya Grahan). The Sarovar features exceptionally clean, deep-stepped ghats, separate changing rooms for women, safety railings, and constant water purification systems managed by the local administration.
  • Question 4: What is the spiritual significance of Sannihit Sarovar?
    • Answer 4: Sannihit Sarovar is believed to be the sacred assembly point of all holy rivers on earth during the night of Amavasya (new moon). Taking a bath here and performing Shradh or Pind Daan (ancestral rituals) is believed to grant eternal peace (Moksha) to the departed souls of one’s ancestors.
  • Question 5: What is the distance between New Delhi and Kurukshetra, and what is the travel time?
    • Answer 5: Kurukshetra is situated approximately 155 km north of New Delhi. By car or taxi via the smooth NH-44 highway, the journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. Alternatively, catching a superfast train from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) takes just about 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • Question 6: Is there a light and sound show at Jyotisar, and what are its timings?
    • Answer 6: Yes, a spectacular, state-of-the-art multimedia light and sound show is held daily at Jyotisar. It beautifully narrates the stories of the Mahabharata and the teachings of the Gita. The show is conducted in both Hindi and English, usually starting after sunset around 6:30 PM (timings may vary slightly depending on the season).
