About Ujjain
Ujjain, the City of Mahakal, is one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations in India and one of the revered Sapta Puri (Seven Sacred Cities) in Hinduism. Situated on the banks of the sacred Shipra River in Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain is home to the Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the only one facing south (Dakshinamukhi). The city has been a prominent centre of spirituality, astronomy, and learning since ancient times and is mentioned in the Mahabharata, Puranas, and the works of renowned poet Kalidasa.
Ujjain is also one of the four host cities of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, attracting millions of devotees from around the world. Along with Mahakaleshwar Temple, pilgrims visit revered shrines such as Kal Bhairav Temple, Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth, Mangalnath Temple, Chintaman Ganesh Temple, and Ram Ghat. Whether you’re seeking the divine blessings of Mahakal, attending the famous Bhasma Aarti, or exploring the city’s rich spiritual heritage, Ujjain offers a deeply transformative pilgrimage experience.
